Watch: Film Face Off: 'To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar' & 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'
For Dreaming of: A tale of two wild-west, desert road trips
Films
One was made in 1994 (Priscilla), one was made in 1995 (Wong Foo), and despite having near identical premises, neither was a riff off of each other. Pure coincidence.
In the now-cult indie classic, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, is the take on three drag queens trekking across the Australian Outback from cosmopolitan Sydney to Alice Springs in the remote desert. Wong Foo features Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo - also drag queens - in a convertible traversing the American West from New York to Los Angeles. Wong Foo hit US mainstream theaters. They are both campy, fun, and perhaps a little before their time. Both are an excellent way to dream of crossing the continental wild west, but no scene is nearly as iconic as the giant high heel and glistening fabric train flying a-top a bus in the middle of a desert.
