Watch: The Durrells in Corfu
TV Series
We just love a PBS Masterpiece epic, and this beautiful portrayal of life in 1930s Greece is no different. Following a young mother and her four children who leave rainy England for a rustic villa in sunny Corfu, this charming show portrays the family’s encounters with locals and their customs, wildlife, and the (sometimes awkward ways) of Mediterranean life. The well-suited cast is better known by British audiences (Keeley Hawes, Josh O’Connor, Leslie Caron), and the local male-heroine (Alexis Georgoulis) is actually a current member of the Greek parliament.
Available on PBS Passport, Disney+, Amazon Prime
Bonus: Check out our Travel Research this week (“The Greek Shortlist”) as our accommodation pick in Corfu is the villa in which the series was filmed. It is now a rental, and renovated too.
Read: The Corfu Trilogy
Novel by Gerald Durrell
Penned by novelist Gerald Durrell, the youngest, animal-loving, budding-scientist son portrayed in The Durrells in Corfu, this is actually the three-part book series upon which the TV series is based. His accounts of living in Greece in the mid-1930s have an affable bias towards nature and a glowing affection for his mother. If you like the TV series, you’ll likely appreciate the passion and depth of these stories. The full Trilogy was published in the UK for a limited time, so it is difficult to find it, and easier to find the three books separately:
My Family and Other Animals,
Birds, Beasts, and Relatives,
and The Garden of the Gods.
Where to find them: Your local, independent bookstore.
