Australia has a surprisingly active motion picture community. We all know the likes of Australians Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, and the late, great Olivia Newton-John.

To get yourself in the mood for an affair Down Under, a here are few of our favorite flicks:

“Young Einstein” (1988) - One of the continent’s weirder stories, a cheery, high tale of young “Albert Einstein,” an inventive (fictional) Tasmanian who ventures to Sydney, entrances Marie Curie, and surprises the world. Written and directed by lead actor Yahoo Serious. Streaming on AppleTV, Amazon, Fandango, and YouTube.

“Muriel’s Wedding” (1994) - Toni Collette plays an un-marriable, Abba-obsessed nerd, who, with co-star Rachel Griffiths, escapes to Sydney to finally start living. “You’re terrible, Muriel!” Free to stream on Hulu, Paramount+, and Amazon.

“Priscilla: Queen of the Desert” (1994) - We’ve previously spoke of this film-turned grandiose drag road trip across the continent. Be sure to visit the bar in Sydney where the story begins. “Hey lady, you lady…I’ve been to paradise but I’ve never been to me.”

“Australia” (2008) - Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann always puts on a visual epic, in this case, set in World War II-era Northern Territories. Bonus: We just can’t get enough of Hugh Jackman’s bare-chested campfire scene. (Blushing!) Streaming on AppleTV, Amazon, Fandango, and YouTube.
