Nominated for Best International Feature Film in the 2024 Academy Awards, this new film starring noted Japanese actor Koji Yakusho, follows the life of a janitor who cleans Tokyo’s public toilets. While we were initially uninspired by the previews, to our surprise, the film told a beautiful story of ordinary Japanese life. Everything in the movie is simple, beautiful, and methodical – true to the culture. Nature is paramount even in the concrete world of the city. And interesting architectural spaces are featured - from the tiny and efficient spaces of urban Japanese living - to the unique toilet structures that dot Tokyo’s landscape. It’s a really beautiful film that conjures life in Tokyo.
