Watch: Old Enough! (1991)
For Dreaming of: Delegating your Errands
A lesson in childhood independence
TV Series
Not many American parents can imagine letting their 3-year-old go to the store to run errands by themselves. But that is exactly what is happening in the 1991 Japanese reality show “Old Enough!”. It follows the lives of families who teach their kids how to be independent at a very young age.. You see children as young as two walking to the local convenience store to grab necessities (and some treats) all on their own. And while there is a camera crew with them, and there’s vetting beforehand, it’s still a fascinating watch, especially to those of us with young children who might never conceive of such a cultural phenomenon.
