Watch: Monarch of the Glen

TV Series

From 2001 to 2005, the BBC aired this dramatic comedy series which depicts the story of handsome laird Archie MacDonald (Alastair Mackenzie), who returns from life in the city to inherit and save his family’s crumbling Scottish castle and estate. Making light of a serious problem in the UK, the show chronicles the trials of an elite family’s declining finances and its maintenance-heavy domain, on which the local village is dependent. Silly at times, the show is lighthearted – maybe even corny – but is worth watching alone for the dramatic scenery and dreamy accents.

The series was filmed at Ardverikie Estate (also the filming location of Balmoral in The Crown). You can catch a peek of the castle if you’re driving on the A86 highway across from Loch Laggan, but it is otherwise closed to the public.
