Watch: “City of God”
For Dreaming of: The harshest side of Rio’s Favelas
Film
Perhaps one of the most iconic Brazilian movies ever made, this intense film captures life in the favelas (or shanty towns) sitting on the hills high above Rio de Janerio. Brazil has a dramatic contrast between the wealthy and poor – there is not really a middle class. Poverty and corruption with drug cartels and the police force is notorious, and the plot is steeped deeply within it. Two young boys from the “Cidade de Deus” neighborhood carry out different paths in life: one dreams of becoming a photographer, the other a kingpin. You’ll be gripping your seat cushion as you watch this beautifully-shot epic unfold.
