Travel Research - Porto: Portugal’s Cultural Capital
Our favorite spots in Portugal’s most panoramic city.
Curated Recommendations and Guide
Porto is Portugal's second largest city, the heart of the "North." While the weather isn't always as sunny as in Lisbon, this city is far more picturesque: Perched on the steep cliffs of the Douro River and the Atlantic, cacophonous layers of tiled buildings descend to the water. It is colourful, it is gritty. Graffiti and intricate tilework juxtapose the modern and historic. The location makes it a gateway to the quieter (and chillier) beaches of the North, and also the Douro Valley to the East. As a consequence, wine and port here is king. Hillsides are illuminated with glowing signs of the 10+ major port wine brands produced here, enticing the palate. Seafood restaurants stretch along the pedestrianized riverbanks, as urban outdoor living in Porto is second to none.
