Travel Research - Fes Guide
Our Favorite Spots in Morocco’s Cultural Treasure Trove

Curated Recommendations and Guide
The capital of Morocco until 1912, Fes remains its second largest city, and remains the spiritual and cultural capital. Medina of Fes – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is considered as one of the most extensive and best conserved historic towns of the Arab-Muslim world. It is also the largest medina in North Africa, a treasure trove of handicrafts, tile, and pottery. Once called the “Mecca of the West” and the “Athens of Africa,” Historic Fes is divided in two parts: New Fez (J’did), which is over 700 years old, and Old Fez (el Bali), 1200 years old, which makes the truly new part of the city (Ville Nouvelle) a far cry from the sensory overload of the latter neighborhoods.
