It's probably the most popular tourist detour for visitors to Lisbon: a day spent in the lush, mountainside village of Sintra about 40 minutes northwest of the city. While many posh Portuguese have weekend homes nearby, it is the centuries-old palaces that most come to see. There are 4 main palaces with elaborate grounds, plus a little town in which to stroll. But plan your visit carefully: parking is a pain, and the lines can be very long.
