If there's one thing for which Bangkok has been renowned: it's the iconic hotels that have traditionally been atop the 'Best in the World' lists for as long as I can remember. For years, The Oriental in Bangkok took the top spot, and now, there's a whole host of rivals, including the resort-like Sukhothai, the Western invaders like the St. Regis, and the brand-new Singaporean Capella. As such, sitting in a grand hotel lobby is not just a tactic to escape the outside's oppressive heat: it is a chance to participate in the luxurious institution of Thai hospitality. Even if you aren't actually an overnight guest, to stop by and have some tea or a cocktail, or even just a peep, you'll be showered with traditional bows, kindness, elaborate florals, and stunning decor.

Beyond the hotel bars, there is another 'list' that continues to grow in Bangkok: many of the world's "best" bars are also located here. So, aside from some very funky alternative spaces, there are dozens of sophisticated bartenders who are dashing up the most creative sort of cocktails one can imagine.

To miss either is to miss a quintessential part of Bangkok, so check out our recommendations for your next trip to the Thai capital.
