My first time in China, which is on the precipice of ultra-modernity

Time Travel: Shanghai, 2005

Storytelling by Gray Shealy and Erin Washington

As a continuation of our narrative on taste, it only feels appropriate to take you to a place that I don’t really like. I’ve been on many visits to China since this first experience back in September of 2005, and despite finding many spots of beauty and tactical interest, it is the experience of food (as a vegetarian) - among other things - that just turns me off. And yet, this first visit to Shanghai is wild: it’s the first time I’ve ever seen the Pacific Ocean, I flew over the North Pole, and ate a bird’s nest on top of the world’s third tallest building (at that time). Taste is something that is formed over years of experiences, in which one is able to compare and contrast differences as they grow and define what is subjectively good and not so good for themselves. In this narrative series, we hope you enjoy the storytelling, but more so, that you’ll get to know us and our taste, so that you can resonate (or not) with the places we recommend and share with you.

Have you ever been to a place you just didn’t like? Even upon repeat visits?

Leaving a travel legacy: I started writing a journal of my travels when I was a teenager. From my first trip overseas to today (where I have travelled to over 100 countries and territories), listen and watch as I open up these writings for the first time in years and re-live the experiences that helped shape my travel legacy. Travel back in time with us in each edition as we reminisce upon a past adventure.
