Time Travel: Italy 2001 & the Power of Scent
In the final days of a semester studying abroad, recalling a scent that is sealed into travel memory.
Storytelling by Gray Shealy and Erin Washington
In this segment, I am in the final days of living abroad during university in December of 2001. 9/11 has just happened while I was away, and my parents have braved international travel when no one was travelling to come for a visit. Even though it was only an hour away from my residence, I finally visited the now-renowned villages of Cinque Terre and Portofino days before I return home. I recall a delicious scent from that day – fried fish wafting in the air of Manarola – prompting Erin and I to discuss the transportative power of scent in travel.

Leaving a travel legacy: I started writing a journal of my travels when I was a teenager. From my first trip overseas to today (where I have travelled to over 100 countries and territories), listen and watch as I open up these writings for the first time in years and re-live the experiences that helped shape my travel legacy. Travel back in time with us in each edition as we reminisce upon a past adventure.
