Time Travel: New Year’s 2007 in Rio de Janerio
At the twilight of 2006, a white party to beat all others on the sands of Copacabana.
Storytelling by Gray Shealy and Erin Washington
It’s the second time I visited my favorite city in the world, Rio de Janerio, and I am ready for my senses to be dazzled once again. Easily the most impressive of the world’s urban and natural landscapes, Rio is a city of juxtapositions – lush/concrete, poor/rich, gritty/refined – sensual, joyous, intoxicating. Escorted by one of my closest friends, a Carioca by birth (she’s from Rio), we venture out on New Year’s Eve into one of the world’s most lively celebrations on Copacabana Beach. Everyone is dressed in white, tossing flowers in the waves as an offering to the goddess of the sea, and millions are samba-ing and singing into the darkness of early morn.
Erin and I talk about the good and bad of New Year’s Eves–mostly disspointing, but when they are done right–they tend to be extraordinary. One such evening of traditional Scottish dance in Glasgow is sealed in her memory as the pinnacle for new year welcomes.

Leaving a travel legacy: I started writing a journal of my travels when I was a teenager. From my first trip overseas to today (where I have travelled to over 100 countries and territories), listen and watch as I open up these writings for the first time in years and re-live the experiences that helped shape my travel legacy. Travel back in time with us in each edition as we reminisce upon a past adventure.
