Taste from Afar: Scottish Shortbread
For Dreaming of: Buttery Highland Delights
Scotland has its fair share of original dishes – from Haggis to Cullen Skink to deep-fried Mars Bars – but perhaps the simplest of all is their shortbread. The first printed recipe was from a Scotswoman named Mrs McLintock in 1736. Made from 1 part sugar, 2 parts butter, and 3 parts flour, these delicious treats are widely distributed as gifts during the holiday season. While you can certainly buy them from famous brands like Walkers, they are also quite simple to make at home.
