Taste from Afar: Pastéis de Nata
For Dreaming of: The Quintessential Portuguese Snack
The Pastéis de Nata is unavoidable. Every coffee shop and bakery has them. Little, sweet, puff-pastry, custard-filled delights that are burnt on the top and are best when warm. But they aren’t all created equally. Some say that Lisbon’s Pastéis de Belém is the best, but frankly, we adore Manteigaria (which has outposts in both Lisbon and Porto).
You may recall that Syllogi made a batch of 120 of these last summer to reminisce on our time in Portugal and to treat our neighbors. It was a two-day effort, making us yearn for the ease of picking one up on the daily coffee runs back across the pond.
