A Luxurious River Lodge near Redwoods National Park
Southern Oregon
Some years ago, this little wooden lodge was all the rage: rated the number one hotel in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure Magazines. Its shiny luster in the media has waned, but this gem is still a guest favorite, and one of our favorite places to hide away on the West Coast. If you’re keen on seeing the soaring Redwoods National Park in far Northern California, there isn’t much surrounding it by way of elegant lodging. Drive one hour north into Oregon, and there you’ll discover the 90-year-old Tu Tu’ Tun. Sitting quietly along the Rogue River, some 10 minutes from the coast, this rustic wooden lodge has outdoor corridors much like a roadside motel, but that’s where the mundane ends. Wood envelopes the place with hints of Art Deco and Frank Lloyd Wright nuances in the design. Standard rooms are cozy with plush mattresses and sheets, helpful baskets of amenities, and terraces that overlook the river. For larger groups, there are glass cabins and private houses. The lodge has a grand gathering space by a stone fireplace, nightly cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the library, and excellent dinners and breakfasts in the dining room. The peace and quiet of this place, whose other residents include wildlife, is what we love. The mist rising off the river at dawn, or taking a dip in the pool by moonlight is just what the doctor ordered. Plus, it’ll get you to drive the coastal road northward along Oregon’s astoundingly beautiful Pacific coast.
