Stay: CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha

A chic, child-friendly stay in the Spanish capital.

Stay: CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha

Madrid, Spain

35 rooms, from 315eur/night

One of the hardest things to find when booking a hotel with children is a large room, especially when travelling outside the United States and not having the budget to book a suite. Being in tight quarters with an active child - your days/nights being dictated by their sleep schedules, and feeling pressured to leave as soon as you wake up so you have room to move - can make for an unpleasant travel experience. This is why CoolRooms Palace de Atocha is one of our favorite hotels for travelling with children. Their rooms are some of the largest in Madrid, and possibly in Europe, with high ceilings and large windows. Additionally, they do an excellent job at making children feel welcome. On a recent stay our child was made rather special with a surprise tent set up in the room, a specially-delivered cookie with his name on it, and a set of crayons and a notebook for drawing. He was greeted each day by name by the friendly staff. Even though CoolRooms isn’t specifically labeled as a kid-centric hotel, they made all of us feel special.

The hotel itself is a fun, Spanish boutique brand property in a converted 19th Century palace whose rooms are some of the largest and brightest in the city. Décor is contemporary, but not slick, as historical details shine through. A small garden and pool compliment the public spaces. There’s a restaurant serving 3 meals daily. Great reviews, including notable service.
