Sip: The Bar in Front of the Bar
One of the world’s best bars has a very cheeky sense of humor
Plaka, Athens, Greece
Cocktails from 11 eur
The Bar in Front of the Bar isn’t quite what you would expect from one of the “World’s Best” drink joints (it landed the 98# spot last year; Athens surprisingly has 4 other bars in the top 100): Its carefree attitude seems contradictory to other, stuffier places on these lists. In fact true to Athenian spirit, most of the bar is al fresco, with patrons drinking on the streets. It serves breakfast, snacks, and coffee, along with a zero-waste cocktail menu that changes on the daily. The space is highly graphic, and their Instagram is worth a look for its fresh and illustrative approach. Cheekier still is the speakeasy that sits behind: it is called “Rumble in the Jungle.” Reviewers love it and commend the bartenders for their friendly service, and mention it is a must for tourists and locals alike.

Every publication will feature one unique restaurant, hotel, activity, or other travel discovery that stood out in our research. Some of these are established institutions that deserve repeat merit, while others are hidden gems that are often off the radar of most. Our commentary is meant to be brief, summarizing the scale and offerings of a place, as well as the best and worst of relevant reviews found across the web – allowing our clients to quickly discern if this a good fit for them.
