See: The Garden of Cosmic Speculation
One of the world’s most unique, mathematically-derived gardens.
Dumfries, Scottish Borders, Scotland
I first learned of this incredible modernist gardenscape when I was studying the history of British landscape architecture in grad school, and I immediately fell entranced with the sculptural berms of grass, carved like cones of earth, and the playful checkerboards of sod. I knew it was a place I must see. Created by architect Charles and Maggie Jencks from 1989 - 1995, the 30-acre landscape is less about an abundance of plants, but more about the geometric and scientific formulae that inspired its design, making it one of the world’s most abstract gardenscapes and works of earthen art. But seeing it is a challenge: it is only open for two days annually in May. Tickets open in February via the Scotland’s Garden Scheme – so plan in advance!

Every publication will feature one unique restaurant, hotel, activity, or other travel discovery that stood out in our research. Some of these are established institutions that deserve repeat merit, while others are hidden gems that are often off the radar of most. Our commentary is meant to be brief, summarizing the scale and offerings of a place, as well as the best and worst of relevant reviews found across the web – allowing our clients to quickly discern if this a good fit for them.
