Reflections: On Taste
Taste has been a growing topic of recent in thinker’s circles. Taste is personal, subjective. Everyone has it, good or bad or just indifferent. It’s far more complex than simply ‘I like blue and I don’t like red…’. Some find it pretentious to discuss, but we have learned the lesson over the years that taste cannot be bought and does not always correlate with a high price tag. Cultivating an expert level of taste does, however, take years of study and practice, with enough exposure to the world to discern greatness from the so-so. And taste is ultimately a catalyst of hard-earned trust: you – the Traveller – must relate and appreciate a source’s taste level in order to truly align with it. To invest in it. To trust in it.
There used to be a time when bloggers thrived, curating unique collections of content that demonstrated their distinct tastes and fed you quality bits of information. In recent years, you may have noticed that it is all but impossible to discover new micro-bloggers like this anymore. The algorithm has buried all of that in lieu of what’s most popular, what’s getting the most clicks, what’s been paid to show up more in your feed. We end up incessantly scrolling trying to find something to inspire us, but we only end up seeing more and more of the same.
Syllogi is actively working against this model, not in an effort to make it to the big leagues, but rather to curate quality intel that appeals to us (and hopefully to you). Forgoing the invasive ads, the secret sponsorships, the stuff the algorithms love and the social giants feed upon, we are returning back to a time when content actually meant something. Back when you actually had to buy a magazine off the rack because you trusted their expert-level taste.
Think of Syllogi Travellers Club as your new ad-free, algorithm-free ‘magazine,’ and not just one where you can read content, but one where you can ask questions and connect with others who like to travel the way you do. We are ‘members-only’ to remain a sacred space, allowing us to share exclusive, candid, and expressive content — hidden gems and finds that are just that: secret and somewhat unspoiled from the ravages of social media. If you find sources you trust, the less digging you have to do, saving you time and helping you travel better.
As you get to know Syllogi, you’ll realize that our picks aren’t exclusively limited to the most expensive. Or the hottest, flashy brand names. Or the toppings of the must-dos in list-mania. Our taste lies in the smaller spots, the boutiques, the places that remain a bit off-the-radar. We invite you to join our little corner of the internet so you can once again trust your travel sources, and find inspiration that resonates with your own taste.
