Read: 'The House'
For Dreaming of: The drama of building an icon.

Book
by Helen Pitt
Even as an architect, I barely knew the genius and drama involved in designing and constructing the Sydney Opera House, a process that took nearly two and a half decades. In this excellent read, the author takes us from the beginnings of the project when it was just an idea of urban revitalization…to the design competition, the political underpinnings of funding an engineering conundrum, the divorce of it’s architect mid-project, and the re-appointment of a new designer much to the chagrin of the architectural world. In fact, it is surprising to learn that its original Danish architect, Jørn Utzon, left the project partially completed, and never returned to Australia to see the finished work.
Find it at your local bookseller or online.
Bonus: if you're really interested in this architectural story, there's an excellent documentary on the Opera House: "Autopsy on a Dream" available to stream for free on YouTube.
