We often think of French Polynesia as being one of the world's most romantic, honeymoon-worthy destinations. But those over-water bungalows in Bora Bora will certainly break the bank. There are other ways to visit this dreamy archipelago. Just this week, The New York Times highlighted some ways to visit Tahiti and Moorea on a budget.

Some highlights:

HomeExchange, a France-based company with an annual fee of $235, offers dreamy tropical homes with beaches as their backyards or on volcanic hillsides overlooking South Pacific bays.
We migrated from one beach to the next, working our way along the western coast, where every beach park was an immaculate public area backed by grass and palms, picnic tables and trees. None had access fees. None were crowded. Even on the busiest days, local families outnumbered tourists. And the locals were easy to spot: They arrived on scooters, arms overflowing with cheap baguettes, like a Parisian stereotype dropped into the South Pacific.
