Read: 'A Year in Provence'
For Dreaming of: Provence, France
Book by Peter Mayle
The classic 1989 Memoir from a British writer who purchased a 200-year-old farmhouse and began a life in a rural village in the South of France. The story is part dream-like and part cultural trial-by-fire, as author Peter Mayle balances his fantasies with reality in immersing himself into the gorgeous provincial landscape, and the steadfast ways of the locals. It was a must-read in our early studies of French language, and remains relevant for those of us who yearn for a taste of living the European lifestyle. For us, this read epitomizes that unbridled spirit of Southern France. The story became so popular that Mayle ended up leaving Provence for the US to avoid his ever-clingy fans, and only returned just before his death in 2018.
Check out Mayle’s other writings including: ‘Toujours Provence’ (A Year's sequel), ‘The Marseilles Caper,’ and others. His book ‘A Good Year’ was made into a movie starring Russell Crowe.
Where to find it: A staple in your local, independent bookstore.
