Listen: "Santa Fe" from 'Newsies'

Music

Newsies was the first movie I remember truly loving. In my lifetime I’ve probably watched it 50+ times and listened to the soundtrack even more. The film (and future stage adaptations) follow young newsboys in New York City who go on strike against Joseph Pulitzer due to the rising costs of newspapers. Perhaps the most iconic song on the soundtrack, "Santa Fe," is sung by Jack Kelly (a young Christian Bale), the orphan who dreams of escaping New York and heading West for a new life. It embodies the struggle and hope of freedom. It’s because of this song that the town of Santa Fe has always held a level of admiration and excitement around it.

While I haven’t seen the film in many years, I still catch myself singing the songs and listening to them throughout the year.

And, it's a fitting accompaniment to our weekend planning feature for Santa Fe.

Watch Christian Bale's original rendition here.
