Listen: Fado Underground

Lisbon, Portugal

Fado is the traditional Portuguese music of 'saudade:' a deep longing, a sound that is quintessentially of this nation, and is a typical must-do. There are many busy performances across the city on touristy stages, but we found a very special spot in which to listen to it: Offered every Friday (and some Saturday) evening throughout the year is this special (and small) performance, held in the abandoned water cistern underneath the Principe Real Park. The venue is small, usually only accommodating 15-30 guests.

Every publication will feature one unique restaurant, hotel, activity, or other travel discovery that stood out in our research. Some of these are established institutions that deserve repeat merit, while others are hidden gems that are often off the radar of most. Our commentary is meant to be brief, summarizing the scale and offerings of a place, as well as the best and worst of relevant reviews found across the web – allowing our clients to quickly discern if this a good fit for them.
