Listen: DC - An Incubator of 20th Century American Music

Music

DC has been a surprising incubator for 20th century song, especially amongst the long-established black community. Go-Go was once the unofficial anthem of DC genres, but many are surprised to hear that legends like Roberta Flack and Marvin Gaye also called Washington their home.

Some of our favorite tracks include:

Duke Ellington’s “Take the A Train”

Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give it Up”

The Blackbyrd’s “Rock Creek Park”

Roberta Flack’s “Making Love”

Chuck Brown & the SoulSearchers “Here We Go Again

Bonus tip: Duke Ellington’s birthplace is 2129 Ward Place, NW - where there is now a mural celebrating his life (pictured above).
