Intel: Wild Camping and RV-ing (with a Caution)
Don’t let these pesky bugs ruin your wild adventure.
One of the best ways to explore Scotland is to camp, and while the country is full of official campsites, there’s another way to explore that allows for the most remarkable, unscripted experiences: Wild Camping. It’s a legal practice in Scotland to essentially set up camp anywhere (except for areas of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park) as long as it’s beyond 100m from any road or building.
While road tripping through Scotland in 2019, we missed the last ferry to the Isle of Mull by three minutes and our only option was to try out wild camping. We drove around the coast for a bit before finding the perfect spot tucked away from the road, with views of the water and the Sound of Mull and Isle of Mull across the way. It was one of our most memorable experiences and, thanks to this unique rule, we were able to do something we would have not done otherwise.

While we’re on the topic of camping, be sure you’re prepared for Midgies. These tiny mosquito-like bugs can be quite ruthless in the summer months so be sure to bring plenty of bug spray and protective gear so you can stay comfortable. For those exploring via RV: a lot of these vehicles are manufactured in Germany, where midges don’t exist - which means the holes of the window and door screens are usually too big to keep the midges out of your camper. Plan accordingly with extra screens or films to avoid waking up covered in bites.
