Intel: Traveling with an Animal? There’s a new rule!
The CDC has just established a new rule for animals coming into the US
This is a niche tip, but we’re putting it out there just in case:
I travel with a service dog, and I am on top of all things transiting internationally with animals. However, I did not know about the new CDC rule that went into effect on August 1st until I (admittedly) was eavesdropping on the airport staff checking me into my flight last week:
The CDC is now requiring any animal arriving into the US to have submitted a pre-arrival application. Previously, when departing the US for another country, it was the other country that required lots of (complicated) paperwork for the arriving animal (including service animals). When returning to the US, no one even batted an eye. But now, they will be scrutinizing all animals. So, if in the off chance you travel with an animal, be forewarned!
From the CDC:
Starting August 1, 2024, there are no veterinary documents required for dogs arriving from dog-rabies free or low-risk countries. The only form needed for these dogs is the CDC Dog Import Form which is completed online by the importer.
