Intel: Petting that Illusive Koala

If you want to hold one, plan accordingly

Intel: Petting that Illusive Koala

Australia is best known for it’s unusual wildlife, and goes to great strides in protecting many of the species. No doubt you’ve heard of the recent controversy over the kidnapping of a baby Wombat, which has the Australian internet enraged. It’s all the more the reason why petting a Koala is a special experience in Australia.

While Sydney has two excellent zoos and wildlife centers for seeing Koalas (Taronga Zoo and Featherdale Wildlife Park), it is located in the state of New South Wales, which doesn’t allow the general public to touch Koalas. Only two of the Australian states actually allow it: Queensland and Western Australia. So, if you’re really intent on actually touching a Koala (like I was), you’ll need to travel to Brisbane’s Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, or Perth’s Cohunu Wildlife Park.
