Intel: Little Luxuries in Coach
Our favorite secrets for making flying tolerable.
We’ve flown around the world for (literally) millions of miles. Some of those flights have been in Business, but sometimes, we’re relegated to Coach.
When the latter happens, we have a few tricks up our sleeve to make the experience a tad-more tolerable:
- “Hot towel” service: In a ziploc bag, fold a small, white rag, add a few tablespoons of water, and some astringent (Sea Breeze or witch hazel). When you’re ready for a refresh, use this to wipe your hands and face. (We like to use it just before landing, or after a rushed connection). You can also buy pre-made cotton cloths soaked in tea tree oil. Some may also bring face moisturizer or lip balm to further the “spa” experience.
- Priority Pass or Lounge Access: If you are a Gold level member or above on many airlines, you can often access the lounges when flying internationally, even in Coach. Delta gives their Platinum and Diamond members (and some of their co-branded credit cards) limited access, and TAP Air Portugal does as well. Or, some credit cards (like the American Express Platinum) offer free membership perks to Priority Pass, a network of lounges that allow you to enter for free.
- Shower in a Lounge: Many international airport lounges offer showers, plus a private toilet and sink, changing area, and fresh towels. There is nothing more refreshing on an extended layover to use this service. We recommend heading straight to the lounge and putting your name on the waiting list, as there is often a line that may take up to an hour. So plan ahead and see if there are lounges with showers in your connection airport. If using Priority Pass, you can search for showers on their app. We like the showers at JFK's Terminal 4 and Atlanta’s Terminal F Delta Skyclub, KLM’s Skyteam Elite Schiphol Lounge in Amsterdam, Virgin Atlantic’s Clubhouse at London-Heathrow, and the TAP Gold Lounge in Lisbon.
- Drink a glass of Champagne: Whether you’re in a lounge where bubbles are often served complimentary, or you stop by a little restaurant or bar in the airport, a glass of your favorite spirit can lift your spirits and be worth the small cost.
- Buy a bottle of water, or bring a refillable bottle. Some airlines skimp on water during meal service, and it is nice to be able to hydrate as you need it onboard.
