Intel: Azores by Air - A Short Hop Away

Mid Atlantic means far from everywhere, and close to everywhere.

Intel: Azores by Air - A Short Hop Away

Did you know that the Azores is just 2.5 hours off the European coast, and 4 hours from the US East Coast?

In fact, United Airlines offers a direct flight to Ponta Delgada (on São Miguel Island, PDL) from Newark.

Azores Airlines (also known as "SATA") offers direct service from Boston to PDL and also Terceira Island (TER).

Most travellers start their journeys in Ponta Delgada, and then venture to other islands from there. There is boat service between the 9 islands of the archipelago, but it is generally much quicker to fly. Azores Airlines offers flights to the islands on most days, with tickets usually starting at 80 euros one way for the 20+ minute flights. However, due to the small airports and propeller-driven planes, flights can often be delayed or cancelled. So, if you are island hopping, leave room for flexibility. It is easy to spend at least 4 days on each island, so plan accordingly.

Note: there is no regular boat/ship service available between the Azores and the continents.
