Intel: ATMs & Cash in Morocco
The Dirham is King (and Euros, too).
Cash is still very much a thing in Morocco. Credit cards are used at some tourist shops and hotels, but if you’re shopping for wares in a medina, or dining at a small cafe, expect to pay in cash. And make sure your riad (if staying in one) takes credit cards too—otherwise, they may expect cash. You’ll get a better deal if you’re paying in the local currency (the Dirham), but locals often accept Euros and sometimes even US Dollars.
ATMs on the street are not terribly reliable. I had to go to several banks in Marrakech before finding one that worked. Your best bet is to withdraw cash from the ATMs at the airport arrivals area. These machines are monitored by police and cameras, so they are generally safe, and give decent exchange rates.
