Interviews

Interview: AJ Washington & Jake Abel

Music Curators

PHLOTE is a DC music club and platform for emerging artists to connect, collaborate, and release music. From their weekly open recording sessions, to their parties at their space in Baltimore, they are experts in finding the best music in the DMV. The team behind it shared their favorites venues:

Highlights from our Interview:

Where's the best place to see a show in DC?

Sun Cinema in Mt. Pleasant, Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club in Northeast, and Rhizome near Takoma Park, non-profit DIY art space known for their dance scene. They’re intimate, fun, and the people who go to these shows are simply there to dance and enjoy themselves.

What’s the best place to find where undiscovered talent is playing?

DC Underworld posts show posters for performances around the city. If you want to find underground artists in hidden gem venues, be sure to check their page. It’s where we are often introduced to new artists and spaces.

Chef Nicolas Terrassin

Nicholas Terrassin is a professional chef that hails from Central France, and has lived in DC for years - working at some of the classic French spots – and has also served as executive chef most recently at a local monastery and now at the University of Maryland.

Highlights from our Interview:

As a professional gastronome, what is your favorite bite in DC?

As a chef, I really admire everything José Andres has done with his restaurant empire. In particular, I love the Chocolate Rose dessert at Zaytinya. It’s to die for.

Do you have any good advice for eating out?

You can tell how clean a restaurant is by looking at their bathroom. If the bathroom is clean, the kitchen is also probably very clean. If it is not clean…beware!
