Reflections: Remoteness
As our world is increasingly peppered with noise - be it political tension, strife, cruelties, the rigors of work, societal obligations, and other countless stressors - travel can be the perfect antidote for divorcing oneself and getting away from it all.
And after all, our world also hosts magnificent, isolated getaways, both near and far. This week, we are all about Remoteness. As the busyness of summer comes to an end, we are craving space and an escape from the frenzy. Whether it is finding solace in the nature of our own backyards, or flying to remote oceanic islands or the poles, travellers are looking to go farther and further in their adventures. For some, its all about the journey - the harder it is to get to, the more appealing it is. While icons like the Eiffel Tower and Canals of Venice were once the exotic lures of the early jet-age, newer generations have redefined the exotic to include less visited destinations like the Falkland Islands, Azerbaijan, São Tomé, and the deep Amazon. "I found three leeches feasting on my foot...the guide quickly came over and rubbed salt on my shattered ego and my feet. I looked down and found something that was part of a Stephen King novel...everywhere I looked, everywhere we stepped, were tiny leeches, inching forward for their next victim."

What’s the Most Remote Place You’ve Been To?
We asked our Club members what they consider to be the most remote places they’ve ever been. We’ve got a well-travelled bunch, whose answers range from deserts, islands, oceanic voyages, and polar extremes:
Danny - “Not crazy remote, but the tiny island of Prvic in Croatia. It’s only accessible by boat and there are no cars or street lights on the island at all.”
Graham - “Easter Island - 5 days of exploration on foot, by taxi, in a rental car was the perfect amount of time.”
Perrine - “My tiny village in northeastern Senegal, Moho Yallalbe, would probably be considered most remote while I was serving in Peace Corps. It had a population of 250, with no electricity or running water and I had the only latrine in the village! And a second would be the Turkana region of Kenya (in the extreme northwest of the country where its desert, guns, and people with those beaded cloths sewn around their necks).”
AJ - “Being in the middle of the Pacific Ocean while serving in the Navy.”
Katie - “Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe”
Beth - “Azores Islands, Portugal”
Manuella - “The Seychelles”
Ryan - “The Antarctic Circle in Antarctica. There isn’t much more remote on this planet than that.
