Reflections: On Family Travel

There’s nothing quite like seeing the world through the eyes of your children. The way they light up at the things you might take for granted, watching them try new foods, or hear new music – makes you see things you have never seen before and changes your worldview. But travel with children is certainly not easy, especially when they are really young. The planning, packing, logistics, jet lag, and cultural adjustments can at times feel overwhelming, but in the end there’s a reason we undertake the ardor. Some of us like to catch glimpses of the world as we did pre-parenthood, but more-so, we do it to show our children the beauty of the world in hopes that they too can become global citizens of their own one day... From the Forum: Members share their own creative family traditions, rituals, and stories. Heather spoke of a co-worker that has her kids draw the name of a state out of a hat each New Year’s Day and that becomes their family vacation to plan that year. (So cool!) Katie spoke of favorite stays at the Ritz Carlton in Vail and the Marriott Vacation Club in Park City (Utah) so they can have all the comforts of home and a resort, while sitting around a big table together. She also spoke of idyllic summers where the kids would go to camp, sail, and bike ride. The adults would go to different seminars and specialty classes, and all meet for dinner together. (Togetherness is what it's all about!) Mia would have her daughters research about the destination before departing, and put those details together in a homemade book to read before bedtime. She would also have them pick a new food that they wanted to try on the trip. (Talk about creative education!) Perrine's child collects sand and magnets at every place they visit, and spoke of helpful locals on a recent mother-daughter road trip through Wales. (At Syllogi, we love a collection!)
