Eat: Bomfim 1896
The finest dining in the vineyards of the Douro.
Pinhão, Duoro Valley, Portugal
If there’s one restaurant I love above all others in Portugal, it’s Bomfim 1896. Set in the heart of the world-famous wine region – the Douro River Valley – amongst the grape vines of Dow’s Port vineyard and a few steps from Pinhão village. Michelin-rated chef Pedro Lemos’ beautifully-designed restaurant looks onto the water where river ships sail past while you dine on white linens (and where servers handle crystalline glasses with white cotton gloves). Given the scenery, it’s best for lunch. I particularly love the “oysters, grapes, and champagne” appetizer, and sampling a bit of port wine from the biggest port bottle I’ve ever seen. A splurge, yes, but completely worth it
