Eat: Aprazível
Dinner in the tropical rainforest of your dreams.
Rio de Janerio, Brazil
Our favorite restaurant in Brazil is an institution, well known by many – but its location high on the hills in the rain forest above Rio makes it a little out of reach for the day-to-day crowd. Going here is a special experience: first you’re in a cab racing up the cobbled streets, winding through the Santa Teresa neighborhood. Then you arrive and descend down into the restaurant, which sits on terraces across the hillside. Guests sit in tree-houses, or niches, or alongside balconies that have vistas of the city below. The setting is the reason for your visit. But the food is also extraordinary: featuring Brazilian cuisine from all parts of the country: taste exotic fruits from the Pantanal, fish from the Amazon, and beef from the highlands. Cocktails are great too. My favorite: an appetizer of hearts of palm. Servers literally bring you a 2-foot roasted palm trunk log, opened up to expose the tender heart of the tree. Incredible.
